Holme’s Hardware
Holme’s Hardware opened at 428 Dundas Street in 1881. The store was very a popular downtown gathering place until its closure.
It became Weeks Brothers Hardware store Bowman’s Hardware store and Dennis Hardware operated on the same site until Gordon and Don Harper move their sporting equipment store there in 1966. Joan Harper took over the family business and started Harper’s Bazaar in 1984 and then Norman Galleries located there in 1987.
Now the building sits vacant and derelict for many years as most of the windows in the upper floors are covered with plastic which are ripped or torn. The elements of our weather are now taking a beating on this building.
You’ll notice in the picture that this building at that time stood by itself on one side. Next time you’re uptown make sure you take a look at the beautiful brickwork on the upper floors someone spent a great number of hours on all the detail of beautiful brickwork on this building. That now unfortunately is just sitting in ruins.
